Transport options

Air freight or ocean freight — which is right for you?

The right mode depends on your timeline, shipment volume and product value. PEC Global handles both from any US origin to any German entry point, with customs clearance and delivery included.

Fast

Air Freight

US to Germany in 5 to 8 business days
Transit time
5 to 8 business days door to door
Best for
High-value goods, urgent shipments, Amazon FBA launches, first test orders
Typical routes
JFK, LAX, ORD, MIA to Frankfurt FRA, Düsseldorf DUS
Cost
Higher per kg — offset by faster cash conversion and lower inventory holding risk

Air freight is the right choice when speed matters more than cost per kilogram. For brands launching on Amazon.de for the first time, for seasonal inventory that must arrive before a campaign, or for high-value goods where the cost of delay exceeds the cost of air freight, this is the reliable path. PEC Global manages air freight from any major US gateway to Frankfurt or Düsseldorf, with customs clearance as Importer of Record and last mile delivery included.

Cost-efficient

Ocean Freight

US to Germany in 18 to 28 days
Transit time
18 to 28 days port to port, 25 to 35 days door to door
Best for
Large volume, regular replenishment, FCL and LCL, non-time-sensitive goods
Typical routes
East Coast ports to Hamburg, Bremerhaven · West Coast ports to Hamburg via Suez
Options
FCL from 20ft and 40ft containers · LCL for smaller volumes sharing container space

Ocean freight is the most cost-efficient mode for shipments above 500 kg or for brands that replenish German or EU stock on a regular cycle. Hamburg is Europe’s third-largest container port and the primary entry point for US-origin ocean freight. PEC Global manages FCL and LCL shipments from East and West Coast ports, handles customs clearance at Hamburg or Bremerhaven as Importer of Record, and coordinates last mile delivery to your final destination.

What is included

The full journey under one contract

PEC Global coordinates every step from your US location to your German or EU destination. Every service below is handled by the same team and billed in one invoice.

US Pickup and Export

We arrange collection from your US warehouse, factory or fulfillment center. PEC Global prepares the US export documentation, including the Electronic Export Information filing through the Automated Export System where required. Your goods leave the US correctly documented from day one, with no action needed on your side.

Ocean and Air Transport

We book freight capacity on established carriers for the US to Germany lanes. For ocean freight we offer both FCL and LCL options based on your volume. For air freight we use the main cargo gateways at Frankfurt and Düsseldorf. You receive tracking updates throughout the journey from departure to arrival.

Customs Clearance as IOR

PEC Global acts as your Importer of Record at the German entry point. We file the ATLAS customs declaration, classify HS codes, pay import duties and manage the 19% German import VAT. No separate customs broker is needed in Germany. This is included in the freight forwarding service, not billed separately.

Warehousing and FBA Prep

After customs clearance, goods can be received at our warehouse in Mettmann near Düsseldorf. We offer storage, inventory management, FBA prep including FNSKU labeling and repackaging to Amazon standards, and pick and pack for fulfillment. All services are optional — use only what your shipment requires.

Last Mile Delivery in Germany

Once cleared, we arrange delivery to any address in Germany — your own warehouse, a third-party logistics provider or directly to Amazon FBA fulfillment centers. We work with established German freight and parcel carriers and provide tracking from our facility to the confirmed delivery point.

EU-Wide Distribution

Goods that clear German customs enter the EU single market and move freely to all 27 member states without further customs procedures. From our Mettmann base we coordinate delivery to the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, France, Poland and beyond through our intra-EU freight network — one contact for the whole continent.

Our process

From your US warehouse to Germany — step by step

STEP 01

Send us your shipment details

Share your product details, commercial invoice, packing list and preferred transport mode. PEC Global calculates the full landed cost — freight, customs duties, import VAT and delivery — and provides a fixed quote. The number you see before the shipment is the number on the final invoice.

STEP 02

Pickup at your US location

Once confirmed, we arrange collection from your US warehouse, factory or fulfillment center. We handle the US export documentation and book freight capacity on the agreed mode — ocean or air — on the US to Germany route. Your goods leave the US fully documented.

STEP 03

Ocean or air transit

Your shipment travels to Germany on the agreed mode. Air freight from major US gateways to Frankfurt takes 5 to 8 business days. Ocean freight from East Coast ports to Hamburg takes 18 to 28 days. You receive tracking updates throughout the journey.

STEP 04

Customs clearance at the German entry point

PEC Global files the import customs declaration via ATLAS before or immediately upon arrival. We are the Importer of Record. Duties and import VAT are paid. With correctly prepared documentation, clearance takes one to three business days. If customs raises any query, we manage it in German on your behalf.

STEP 05

Warehousing and preparation (optional)

After clearance, goods can be received at our Mettmann warehouse for storage, FBA labeling and prep, or consolidation before onward delivery. This step is fully optional — if you have your own logistics partner in Germany, we hand over the cleared goods directly.

STEP 06

Delivery to your final destination

Your goods are delivered to your German warehouse, to an Amazon FBA fulfillment center, or to any EU address. You receive the full documentation package: customs clearance certificate, duty and VAT receipt, and delivery confirmation. The journey is complete.

Amazon FBA Germany

Shipping to Amazon.de? We handle everything from your US warehouse to the fulfillment center.

Amazon FBA in Germany requires more than a standard freight shipment. Every inbound needs a valid Importer of Record on the customs declaration — Amazon does not accept shipments without one. Units need FNSKU labels applied at a warehouse before delivery. Cartons must meet Amazon specifications. And delivery slots must be pre-booked through Amazon’s carrier network or the window closes. PEC Global manages the complete FBA journey: pickup in the US, ocean or air freight to Germany, customs clearance as Importer of Record, FNSKU and carton prep at our Mettmann warehouse, and booked delivery directly into Amazon’s German fulfillment network.

FAQ

Freight forwarding US to Germany — your questions answered

Straight answers on transit times, customs, FCL and LCL, and Amazon FBA. Still unsure? A consultation is free.

For air freight, door to door from major US airports to Germany takes 5 to 8 business days including customs clearance. For ocean freight, port to port from US East Coast ports to Hamburg takes 18 to 28 days, with door to door typically 25 to 35 days depending on the final destination. PEC Global provides firm transit estimates in every quote based on the specific route and mode.
Every PEC Global freight quote covers US pickup, ocean or air freight to Germany, customs clearance as Importer of Record, import duties and VAT, and delivery to your specified German destination. We quote the full landed cost — not just the freight charge. There are no line items on the final invoice that were not in the original quote.
No. Customs clearance is included in the PEC Global freight forwarding service. We act as your Importer of Record and file the ATLAS customs declaration directly. You do not need to engage a separate customs broker in Germany. One team manages the freight and the customs process under one contract.
FCL stands for Full Container Load — your goods fill a dedicated container, typically a 20ft or 40ft box. LCL stands for Less than Container Load — your goods share space with cargo from other shippers and you pay only for the volume you use. LCL suits shipments between roughly 1 and 15 cubic meters. Above that, a dedicated FCL container becomes competitive on cost. PEC Global advises on the right option for your specific volume.
Yes. PEC Global regularly manages FBA inbound shipments from the US to Amazon fulfillment centers in Germany. We handle the full process: US pickup, freight to Germany, customs clearance as Importer of Record, FNSKU labeling and carton prep at our Mettmann warehouse, and pre-booked delivery through Amazon’s carrier network to the correct fulfillment center.
If German customs requests additional documents, conducts a physical inspection or issues a query, PEC Global manages the entire process. We communicate with customs in German on your behalf, provide any requested documents and resolve the hold as quickly as possible. Because PEC Global is both the freight operator and the Importer of Record, there is no handoff to a separate party — one team owns the problem and solves it.
Yes. Many clients operate on regular replenishment cycles — monthly or quarterly shipments to maintain German or EU stock levels. PEC Global manages these as ongoing logistics programs with fixed routing, agreed transit times and a dedicated contact for every shipment. Volume-based pricing is available for recurring shipping schedules.
Not necessarily at the point of import. PEC Global pays the German import VAT as part of the customs clearance process. However, if you intend to sell goods in Germany and want to reclaim the import VAT, you will need a German VAT registration. PEC Global can advise on the VAT registration process for non-EU companies and connect you with the right specialist if needed.
